Saturday Night Cine Club

You can count on Charlotte Film Society's Saturday Night Cine Club to screen foreign flicks that not only introduce viewers to other cultures, but challenge them to see the world in a whole new light. This month's Cirkus Columbia, directed by Danis Tanovic and based off of a novel by a popular Bosnian Croat writer Ivica Dikic, takes viewers to Bosnia-Herzegovina. Divko Buntic (Miki Manojlović) returns after the dissolution of Yugoslavia and its communist regime, which had forced him into a 20-year exile in Germany. Things begin to unravel quickly for the now well-to-do Buntic, as his cat goes missing and his relationships take a downward spiral. But that's all minor compared to a bigger threat, the Bosnian War. Here’s where the Clash's "Should I Stay Or Should I Go?" fits to a tee, as it's the big question that he's left to ponder. Discussion after the film will be led by Robert Reimer, Ph.D., chair and professor of Languages and Culture Studies at UNC Charlotte. Film is in Bosnian with English subtitles.
