Saturday Night Cine Club

The Charlotte Film Society has shown a lot of love toward Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, and that's a good thing. If it wasn't for this organization, none of this man's movies would ever have played the Queen City. Yet because of the CFS's commitment to quality moviemaking from around the globe, local audiences have had the opportunity to catch at least four of his pictures, including Offside and Crimson Gold (both making my Top 20 in their respective years). Panahi has often been in trouble with his own government due to his provocative films, and he's currently appealing a sentence that will land him in jail for six years and ban him from making any movies for the next 20 years. Despite this threat, Panahi illegally made This Is Not a Film in his own house, later managing to have it smuggled out of the country (on a flash drive hidden inside a cake!) and into the hands of the Cannes Film Festival heads. The documentary focuses on Panahi as he chats about his current predicament, reflects on the art of cinema and discusses his own movies. For more information, visit www.charlottefilmsociety.com.
