Sausages galore 

Local sausage links

• My favorite chorizos are made by Andrew D'Rouco whose family has been making sausages in his native Spain since the 1700s. Today D'Rouco makes artisanal Spanish and Mexican chorizo sausages in Matthews. His sausages can be found at Whole Foods or through La Tienda online (www.tienda.com). D'Rouco also sells directly to U.S. Foodservice and SYSCO, so you may find his sausage at market near you.

• At Ferrucci's, sausages are made fresh daily, including hot and sweet Italian sausages; cervalat with cheese, parsley and pork; bratwurst; and chicken with basil pesto in both spicy and regular. Sausages range in price from $5.99 to $6.99. Hours: Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

• The Joubert family has been producing and selling South African-styled biltongs in Stallings for 7 years. Biltong to South Africans is taken as seriously as Champagne is to the French. Biltong, a dehydrated meat that looks like jerky but definitely does not taste like jerky, and droewors, another traditional South African sausage, are available in a variety of flavors and spice levels. The meat is from Hickory, and the Jouberts sell their sausages throughout the United States. Also available are boerewor, a breakfast sausage, and lamb sausages. Biltong ranges from $18.50 to $20.50 per pound. Recently Biltong USA received organic certification. Hours: 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
