See & Do

NOVEMBER 6-
WEDNESDAY
Struggling actors frequently survive by working "temporarily" in the restaurant biz. Well, the hero of Charlotte Rep's Fully Committed has the dream temp job -- that nightly transforms into an overbooked nightmare -- handling reservations at a posh Upper East Side eatery. Here the super-rich and the showbiz bigwigs who shun him by day are dying to be seen at night. Scott Helm plays Sam -- and 35 other roles in this frenetic one-man comedy. With M. Butterfly still ensconced at Booth Playhouse, this new Rep production opens at McGlohon Theatre in Spirit Square. Tickets are $24 for previews through Thursday, $26-$31.50 from Friday's premiere through November 17. Call 704-372-1000 or order online at charlotterep.org. (Tannenbaum)

The Yohimbe Brothers, made up of former Living Colour member Vernon Reid and DJ Logic, will perform at the Visulite Theatre at 9pm. Tickets are $15. The "Brothers" are promoting their current album, Front End Lifter, which also features contributions from Prince Paul (of De La Soul fame), Slick Rick, and all the original members of Living Colour. As the record warning says, "This music may cause extreme sexual excitability. An eclectic mix of everything that is one part Vernon, one part Logic, two parts Yohimbe, and 3 parts the future. . ." This show is a must-see. For more information, call 704-358-9200. (McKinney)

The Charlotte Rep co-production (with Syracuse Stage) of David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly continues through Sunday. It's an exotically erotic reversal of Puccini's tragic opera that took Broadway's Tony Award. J LaRue tackles the challenging role of Song Liling, the Chinese opera diva who turns out to be a Maoist undercover agent. Allen Fitzpatrick is the hapless French diplomat, Rene Gallimard, who somehow manages to delude himself for 20 years about his paramour's

gender and politics. Most amazing is that it's based on a true story. Tickets are $26-$31.50. The performance is at Booth Playhouse. Call 704-372-1000 for tickets or surf to www.charlotterep.org. (Tannenbaum)

The Latin American Film & Video Festival 2002 continues this week with a screening of the Oscar-nominated Mexican hit Amores Perros tonight at 8pm at Davidson College. Other screenings this week include the Oscar-winning film Black Orpheus Monday, November 11, at 7pm at Johnson C. Smith University and I, the Worst of All, at Wingate University on Wednesday, November 13 at 7pm. Admission is free; call 704-687-4635 for details. (Brunson)

The Charlotte Checkers take to the ice against the South Carolina Stingrays tonight at 7:05pm at Cricket Arena. Tickets range from $7 to $20. Call 704-522-6500 for more info.

NOVEMBER 7-
THURSDAY
Singer/songwriter Carrie Newcomer will be in concert tonight at the Neighborhood Theatre at 8pm. Newcomer's latest CD, The Gathering of Spirits, is in heavy rotation in my car player. It's an upbeat collection of heartfelt songs that really showcase her strong voice -- both literally and philosophically. L.J. Booth will open the show. Tickets are $12.50. Call 704-358-9298. (Wicker)

NOVEMBER 8-
FRIDAY
New York-based jam band moe., supposedly named after a Louis Jordan tune (I'd wager it's more likely the bully in Calvin and Hobbes), play the Grady Cole Center beginning at 8pm tonight. Tickets for the gig are $20, available by calling 704-522-6500. (Davis)

Radio station WNCW is holding a fundraiser tonight at 6:30pm at the Neighborhood Theatre. Special guest will be World Cafe host David Dye with music by honky-tonker Thad Cockrell and his band. The event will help WNCW raise fund for their quest to upgrade to full power service in the Charlotte area, since the station is in danger of losing the 100.7FM frequency to commercial station interference. Tickets are $50 per person or $75 for a couple. For more details see www.wncw.org or reserve your tickets today at 800-245-8870.

NOVEMBER 9-
SATURDAY
Center of the Earth Gallery in NoDa is hosting Maggie Taylor: Looking Back, a show of work by, you guessed it, Maggie Taylor. Her artwork, which she creates from photography and computer-generated imagery, evinces a symbolic, dreamlike world through her own brand of gentle surrealism. Imagine images by Magritte if the Belgian surrealist had been an American who collected Victorian postcards. The exhibit will be up through December 28. For more info, call 704-375-5756.

NOVEMBER 10-
SUNDAY
Organic soulstress India.Arie (sure are a lot of musicians with periods in their names this week), one of the fresher voices to appear on the R&B scene last year, brings her high-energy stage show to Ovens Auditorium tonight at 8pm. Tickets for the concert are $38.50, available by calling 704-522-6500. (Davis)

The struggling Carolina Panthers, featuring possible rookie of the year candidate Julius Peppers and not a whole lot else, take on Deuce McAllister and the surging New Orleans Saints today at 1pm at Ericsson Stadium. Be sure not to leave early or you could miss the now-traditional Fourth Quarter Choke. Tickets begin at $24, and are available by calling 704-522-6500. (Davis)

NOVEMBER 11-
MONDAY
As a tie-in to their exhibit Feelin' Groovy: Rock "n' Roll Graphics, 1966-70, the Main Library is offering the Groovy Film Series, with late-60s features (directed by some of the era's top directors). This week's film is Richard Lester's 1968 Petulia, about an odd romance between a surgeon (George C. Scott) and a younger woman (Julie Christie). Start time is 7pm; admission is free. Call 704-336-6217 for details. (Brunson)

NOVEMBER 12-
TUESDAY
In much the same way that people flock to the scene of a catastrophe, you can be sure that we'll be making our obligatory pilgrimage to Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance at Belk Theater. After all, this is an awesome cultural event that exists somewhere on the border between cheeseball and soap opera: pure innocent Celtic folk-dance bastardized by Radio City glitz and Tolkein mysticism, then married to the demonic production values of Kiss. And every blinding toe tap is the brainchild of a former Riverdance star transparently motivated by greed! Who could resist? Today through November 17. Call for tickets, $20-$58, at 704-372-1000, or order online at performingartsctr.org. (Tannenbaum)
