Pssst! Only one person can get you a seat at The Hotel Project, the unique by-invitation-only theatre event somewhere in the Marriott City Center. You walk up to the bartender at Cutters Lounge, order a drink, and -- if you're on the reservation list -- you get a key to the hotel suite for the show. Reliable sources say two one-acts have been commissioned for the Project, customized for the cozy suite. Now you didn't hear it here, but you can wangle an invitation ($15, excluding drinks) by calling the Hotel Project reservation line at 704-334-2602. Performances 7:30 and 10pm through Sunday. Journey to a "vast metaphysical Rhode Island" as Mac Wellman's Description Beggared; or the Allegory of Whiteness prompts us to meditate on class and identity -- or indulge in racial guilt. No Charlotte theater group is better attuned than The Farm to Wellman's lyricism and neo-Joycean babble. But Beggared, presented in the catacombs of the Children's Theatre Black Box, is uncharted territory even for the trailblazing Farm Theatre, the company's first musical production. An all-original score, written and performed by Jon Phillips, replaces Michael Roth's work for "purveyors of transcendental music and bad jazz." Performances at 8pm through August 16. The Charlotte Knights return home after six days on the road to take on the Norfolk Tides tonight at 7:15pm and tomorrow night at 6:15pm. Christian music group Avalon will perform a concert after the game on Friday. On Saturday, the Knights play the first in a four-game series against the Louisville Bats at 7:15pm with fireworks following the game. The series continues on Sunday with an afternoon game at 2:15pm. The last two games will be played on Monday and Tuesday at 7:15pm. Tickets cost $6-9 and may be purchased by calling 704-36-HOMER. (Herman)

The building housing Hart-Witzen Gallery is being demolished to make way for railroad expansion. The Gallery has to move out of the rented building at 611 W. 5th Street by August and the gallery owners have decided to send their former home out in style. They've gathered as much paint as possible and turned the walls into a work of art. You can check out the Demolition Zone Exhibit tonight and Aug. 15 from 8pm-1am. Singer/songwriter Melanie, a quiet favorite at the original Woodstock, is back on the road again. The 60s earth mother who brought you "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)," "Beautiful People," "Brand New Key" and a terrific, and underrated, early-80s album Photograph will be appearing tonight at the Neighborhood Theatre at 8pm. Beau Jarred Schekeryk (now there's a decidedly un-household name) opens. Tickets are $20 in advance, and $25 at the door. It's hard to think about football when it's hot enough out to make you break into a sweat just walking to your car. Nonetheless, you can get your first look at the 2003 Carolina Panthers -- that would be the Panthers that got rid of their best player, Wesley Walls, and now have four potential starting quarterbacks, none of whom are inspiring -- at Fan Fest, held at Ericsson Stadium from 3-7pm. The Catwalk and Fun Zone open outside the North Gate at 3pm with contests, face painting, balloon animals and more. The Stadium opens at 3:30pm where you can view videos on PanthersVision and on-field performances by the TopCats and Sir Purr. At 5pm, the Panthers will take the field for their practice.
