HURRAY FOR THE RIFF RAFF

The name of the woman who was gang-raped and murdered on the Delhi bus in 2012 was never made public, but she’s called Damini, which means “lightning,” and her story is the spark that animates “The Body Electric,” Hurray for the Riff Raff’s feminist rejoinder to misogynist, turn-of-the-20th century murder ballads. Nuyorican-by-way-of-New Orleans Alynda Lee Segarra rode the rails like a John Steinbeck character before becoming HftRR’s guiding light and front-woman, and Steinbeck’s dust-bowl quest for justice imbues her spare-yet-smooth Americana as much as Woody Guthrie’s bedrock folk and Johnny Cash’s hallowed country. Inspired by riot grrrls’ stereotypical role model rejection, she advances her progressive agenda with gentle, slightly world-weary persuasion, cutting bone-close to folk’s populist, political origins.
