Sideways set a SEFCA record by winning a total of five awards, also picking up citations for Best Supporting Actor (Thomas Haden Church), Best Supporting Actress (Virginia Madsen), Best Director (Alexander Payne) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Payne and Jim Taylor).
The indie hit about wine, women and whining was the only multiple winner in this year's balloting, with the other honors spread out among a handful of films. Jamie Foxx earned Best Actor for his portrayal of music legend Ray Charles in Ray, while Annette Bening copped Best Actress for her work as a stage diva in Being Julia. Charlie Kaufman snagged the Best Original Screenplay prize for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, while the controversial Fahrenheit 9/11 earned the nod for Best Documentary. Finally, Maria Full of Grace edged out A Very Long Engagement for Best Foreign-Language Film.
SEFCA is comprised of 45 film reviewers living in nine states, with three of its members here in Charlotte: Creative Loafing's Matt Brunson, The Charlotte Observer's Lawrence Toppman, and Harvey Burgess, a contributor to the annual DVD & Video Guide.
