As the holidays near, so do traditions -- tearing out your hair and saying, "shit, I should have went shopping sooner," spring to mind -- but other more pleasant ones exist too. Christmas in Davidson has been a tradition since 1988. For three nights (Dec. 4, 5, 6) downtown Davidson becomes a Christmas-fused zone (setup on the Village Green, but stores on the main strip are open too) of vendors selling a variety of gifts from Moravian Christmas Stars to homemade organic dog treats. Lots of food vendors are around, as well as a live nativity, strolling carolers and performances by a variety of choirs and bands. Along the street you have the opportunity to take carriage rides or hay rides. The event is free, but of course you want to bring cash for some gift buying. And for those with children -- never fear -- bring 'em along, as the event features activities for children and a visit from the jolly ol' fat man himself, Santa Claus, in the Davidson Public Library each night. Christmas in Davidson really is a place where you can let loose and embrace the holidays without being cooped up in a mall of madness. Free. 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Downtown Davidson (on the Village Green).
