SPECIAL EVENT: Urban League of Central Carolinas 2009 Leadership Awards 

Friday, Jan. 23

Soul vocalist Noel Gourdin, best known for last year's popular single "The River," will serve as the headlining act for the Urban League of Central Carolinas 2009 Leadership Awards ceremony. This year the event takes place at The Big Chill and, along with providing entertainment from Gourdin, is designed to honor local African-Americans who are doing good works in the community. $35 in advance. 9 p.m. The Big Chill, 911 E Morehead St. 704-373-2256, ext. 203.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site.
