Sports: Not just horsin' around

Friday, April 11

Make it a family affair this weekend at the 2008 Charlotte Jumper Classic. Watch the nation's best horse and rider teams show off their skills and enjoy three days of activity-packed equestrian fun. There is something for everyone here, including vendors, face painting, balloon artists, jugglers and clowns for the kids. Children ages 5-12 can participate in the stick pony race and get rider autographs after the competitions. This year the rider pavilion will be open for 30-minute horsemanship seminars and clinics. And don't miss the regal Budweiser Clydesdales who will make several appearances throughout the weekend. April 11- April 13. $5-$99. Charlotte Bobcats Arena, 333 E. Trade St. 704-522-6500.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
