Sports: See you at the races

Saturday, April 26

What better way to spend a beautiful spring afternoon than at the 13th Annual Queen's Cup Steeplechase? Get there early; the festivities begin at 10 a.m. with pony rides for the kids and a military display. Continue your afternoon with a McAlisters Deli Tailgate Contest and the Iams Terrier Races. The real fun begins at 1 p.m. with four races and the raffle drawing. And of course, no true Q.C. steeplechase would be complete without burgers and barbecue -- so eat up and enjoy the thrill of the chase. Prices vary. 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Brooklandwood, 6103 Waxhaw Highway Mineral Springs. 704-843-7070.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
