Virgo
The Virgin (Aug. 22 — Sept. 22)

The sun returns "home" to your sign on the 22nd. You may find it to be energizing. Now is the time to focus on new plans for this next year of your life. Take a fresh look at where you want to direct your energy for the long term. If you take the reins, where do you want to go?

For All Signs This has been a peculiarly unbalanced summer of planetary energy. Throughout June and part of July there were no planets in the earth (grounded, practical) signs. Now we have earth but almost no energies in the water signs. An absence of water suggests that we will over or undercompensate with our emotions. We will tend to ride a roller coaster from passion to lassitude. The news is full of stories that are about the uncontrolled emotional response or its opposite, the totally flattened attitude.

Aries Mars, your ruling planet, is slowing its speed in preparation for a two month retrograde period this fall. This cycle happens every 26 months. Your energy level is almost always very high, but things slow to a crawl during these phases.

Taurus In late July you began a new activity or possibly adopted a new approach to living. Prepare yourself for the momentum to crawl or maybe stop altogether through the fall. It is hard for you to take initiatives and this one requires careful planning.

Gemini This week your planetary ruler, Mercury, is moving at a very slow pace. Its activity represents your frame of mind. You need to be careful and deliberate with your planning now, because soon you'll be tackling activity at breakneck speed. Vehicles may be a problem.

Cancer You are still in a nostalgic type of mood. Going "home" sounds really good at this time. Property matters are helped along and you may be taking steps to insure your security this summer. Your physical health continues to be an issue and may require additional attention now.

Leo Your focus shifts this week to the area of resources, which includes finances, time, and/or energy. You may need to reorganize your priorities and set up new systems of operation. Travel is an option and may combine business or education with pleasure.

Libra Venus entered your sign on the 17th and will be traveling "with you" through Sep. 10. This week your life events are erratic and the schedule challenging, particularly on routine affairs. You feel drawn toward helping others through group activities.

Scorpio Please read the column for Aries, because it also applies to you through the fall. In particular, the upcoming retrograde cycle involves your significant other(s). The stage is being set for a several week period of reflection upon the relationship, whether you want it and why you want it.

Sagittarius Your charisma and gift with people is certainly useful during this period. Being part of a group, whether the activity is social or professional, is appealing and you may be the instigator of more than one event. Others love your company.

Capricorn A new business associate, probably female, enters the scene. She is both attractive and complements your abilities. It is possible you first encountered this person at the end of June or early July and now this is the second stage of your work together.

Aquarius I hope you are still on vacation, because the summer's strain has been heavy. You become aware of a karmic outcome, related to your financial picture or your sense of overall worth in the world. Another theme is tied to disappointment or sadness concerning your significant other.

Pisces Give more than normal attention to your health and physical condition now. Notice any message that your body sends and do it or stop doing it, whichever seems the most prudent. You are getting a strong communique that says "you simply cannot control everything that happens."

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
