Stargazer

For the week of June 16, 2004

For All Signs We come to the time of the summer solstice at 8:57 pm EDT on the 20th. This is the point of the year at which the northern hemisphere is tilted closest to the sun. Theoretically it is the longest day of the year in the north. For centuries, pagans (country people) celebrated this day with prayers and requests for blessings from mother earth, who would soon yield the summer harvests. Consider taking a moment to give honor and thanks to the plant life, which continues to fight the battle against our pollution.

Aries Be careful what you wish for, because you might win it this week. You are energized and ready, loaded with creativity and vigor. You feel a strong desire to connect with others, or perhaps it is just one individual in particular. Go for it!

Taurus You run up against a wrinkle in a lifelong issue: money. You revel in the good life, in luxurious accommodations, expensive clothing. You may even think you need those things. But you can have a good time now without such expense.

Cancer The sun returns "home" to your sign this week. Now is the time to focus on new plans for this next year of your life. Take a fresh look at where you want to direct your energy. It is appropriate that your attention be directed toward yourself right now.

Gemini Your physical cycle is mildly low this week. You may be annoyed by allergies or minor aches and pains for the first few days, but improvement comes quickly. You have a desire to make things more beautiful in your environment. Money may be an issue.

Leo The Lions experience a twist of fate annually. Beginning at the summer solstice, it is a time of retreat. This time is meant to help you recharge, refuel, and become more clearly in touch with your inner self. Meditate, reflect, journal, and read spiritually uplifting material.

Virgo There is much emphasis on your career or work in the world this week. Now is the time to speak up and take action on bright ideas for improvements. Call your friends and business contacts. Those with fluctuating incomes will do well during this period.

Libra During this period your deep faith in the future keeps you moving. Although life circumstances suggest you should doubt yourself, something deep inside is telling you to hold on and expect a fine outcome. Travel, writing, publishing, and educational activities are favored.

Scorpio You are the spark that lights the fire under everyone else this week. You may be the one who pulls others together to create a fine gathering or to resolve a group dilemma. You can make things happen in the areas of education, philosophy, publishing, or the law.

Sagittarius You are feeling happy, expansive and optimistic. It will be easy to spend a lot, indulge yourself and others, and forget about all discipline. The time is ideal for a vacation because work is not at all interesting, but relationships, the arts and playfulness are a major draw.

Capricorn Your partner or a significant other may experience a disappointment this week, but you will be right there to offer encouragement and support. You know the value of a positive attitude in times of trouble because you have struggled so with that issue yourself.

Aquarius Your physical cycle is going through a minor dip, especially early this week. You will need more sleep than normal and allergens may be especially troublesome. Energies suggest misunderstandings, so make an effort to communicate clearly.

Pisces You are feeling restless and maybe even a bit anxious, without really knowing what is causing the trouble. It is boredom. You need to change your life routine, add more play. Fortunately, a significant other initiates something fun or pleasurable that breaks up the monotony.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
