Mystic yet mordant, airy yet scalpel-sharp, Suzanne Vega has always skewed left of center. Her 1987 break-out hit “Luka” details an abused child’s eerie resignation, cloaking Vega’s gut punch in restrained and literate folk-pop. Though she set the musical template for artists like the Indigo Girls and performed regularly at Lilith Fair, Vega was too otherworldly to be part of the female singer/songwriter boom that she ignited. At heart, she’s still the transcendent, brainy folkie who found inspiration in Lou Reed’s acidic-yet-sensitive streetwise poetry. Wrapped in her cool, clear alto, Vega’s passion rips through the seams of her bright and measured melodies. (Michael Walsh)
