Sweet Thangs

Sunday, July 8

Yes, yes, I like my G-chords dripping with a vanilla-chocolate swirl of summertime fun. Give me ice cream and a jam session with some old-time acoustics and Heaven is no longer a myth. Stocked with children's toys and games, free museum admission, plus the aforementioned delectible frozen treats and classic chords, the Charlotte Folk Society and the Charlotte Museum of History join forces once again to present an Ice Cream Social and Old-time Acoustic Music Jam this afternoon. They certainly know the way to Charlotte's heart, offering freebies, food, and music right when all hope was lost to unbearable heat. With fun for all ages packed neatly on the grounds of the Charlotte Musem of History, I imagine an ice cream sundae topped with the most congestive heart failure-inducing products would serve me just right. Hold the sprinkles, please. 1:30-4:30 p.m. Charlotte Museum of History, 3500 Shamrock Drive. 704-563-7080.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
