ZORCH
I can’t recall how I stumbled across Zorch’s 2009 demo, but it immediately stuck with me; this wacky little Texas duo, I thought at the time, needs to stick around and keep making music. Fortunately, they have, as a 2011 EP and summer 2013 LP ZZOORRCCHH attest. What was initially Lightning Bolt-meets-Wham City wall-of-keyboards, maximalist instro-pop has shifted toward mutated polyrhythm dance odysseys, while a bliss-till-you-drop vibe runs throughout their oeuvre: think Liars, Dan Deacon, Girl Talk and a mercilessly accelerated Phil Collins, all played simultaneously and at top volume. Good for them, then, opening for celebrated pedalheads Tera Melos; with any luck, this weird little star will only keep rising. (Corbie Hill)
