The Blotter

* Give Me a Break: One hungry thief decided to go for the good stuff when he hit up a local convenience store. Walking directly to the candy aisle, the chocoholic grabbed a giant-size Kit Kat Bar and ran out of the store before the store employee could think to stop him.

* Give Me A Break II: When approached by a man begging for spare change, a good-hearted woman decided to give him a break. The woman reached into her pocket to see what she could spare and before she could react, the beggar grabbed everything out of her hand and ran off. Instead of a couple of quarters, the woman let go of over $40.

* Ride 'Em Cabby: A cabby picked up a passenger who asked to be taken to a specific destination. The passenger first demanded that the driver turn off onto a side road, to which the driver complied. The passenger then demanded that the cabby pull over and turn off his lights. The passenger then turned hostile and put a knife to the driver's throat and demanded his money (a whopping $7) and ordered the stunned driver out of the car. The knife-wielding passenger then drove off, leaving the stranded cabby alone in the dark.

* Dear Meat: A meat lover lost a precious commodity last week when the deep freezer near his home was ransacked. The freezer, which was located in the man's laundry room, was entered by several thieves and was completely emptied out. In all, over 25 pounds of venison was stolen, valued at around $1,250, which comes to 50 bucks a pound.

* Puppy Love: Two neighbors claimed the same German Shepherd puppy. The rightful owner (the one with the papers and registration) lost the puppy one day when it wandered away. After discovering that the puppy was missing, the owner posted "lost dog" flyers around the neighborhood and searched for the lost dog for several days. While searching, the owner was approached by a little girl who claimed to know the whereabouts of the lost puppy. The owner confronted a woman who supposedly was keeping the puppy and asked about the dog. The woman confessed to having the dog but claimed that the puppy was now hers because "too much time had gone by." She went on to say that the owner didn't have "rights" to the puppy anymore and that, in any case, the now-previous owner hadn't taken care of the puppy. The dog-snatcher told the owner that because she had already ordered tags for the dog, this denoted ownership and refused to return the puppy. The man called the police.* Embarrassing Transaction: A bashful thief had good intentions last week but carried them out the wrong way when he entered a local store and ran off with two boxes of Trojan condoms without paying. * Psychic Machinery: A local lobby ATM machine is causing trouble downtown. When one customer slid his card into the machine, the ATM wouldn't allow him to make his transaction and refused to return his card. Confused and frustrated, the man stood back and allowed another customer to have a go at it. The machine pulled the same stunt and swallowed the second man's card as well. When the disgruntled man called the bank to report the incident, it seems that the machine wasn't to blame. The man was told that all the money in his account was mysteriously missing. *
