The current world crisis and the Great Depression

Regular horoscope will return next week.

There is a particular arrangement of planets that is known to astrologers as the Great Depression T-Square. It involves the planets Saturn, Uranus and Pluto in challenging aspects to each other. Their last war in the sky began in 1930. One could think of them as the super-gods of mythology, circling the battleground and ultimately squaring off for a three-way battle at the Pantheon. We are currently only beginning a highly similar trip and it likely will require years to finish, as did the worldwide Depression of the '30s. These three planets have not been in such a challenging arrangement since that time.

Pluto, player #1:

Pluto, planet of metamorphosis and drama, entered Capricorn in January 2008. Capricorn is the sign of politics, business, banking and the infrastructure. It is the home place of Saturn. The entry of Pluto represents the January '08 slide toward the market crash in September 2008. Pluto's purpose is transformation of that which has gone rotten enough to stink. It represents the crushing and pulverizing of the remains of dead things until they change form. It is relentless, cruel at times, and compels us to seek retribution for wrongs. Pluto seeks truth and takes no prisoners.

Saturn, player #2:

Saturn represents the military industrial complex with its supporting financial structure. It is the planet of the Established Order of things and is a powerful earthly force. Any of us who have tried to alter the Establishment understands the concrete strength of its nature. Saturn's primary purpose is to maintain the status quo, whether or not it is good for the people.

Uranus, player #3:

Uranus represents "we, the people ..." of all lands in the world. It is the planet that symbolizes the collective Little Guy, those of us who are just trying to live our lives as productively as we can and maybe even play a bit. In extreme cases "we the people" can become rebellious and explosive. In the 1700s Uranus was a major player of the American, French and Russian revolutions. At the time Uranus was in a lengthy battle with Pluto. Uranus rarely has a "right" answer, just as most people do not. But it represents the explosive burst into action after a long underlying unrest.

21st Century War Games

In January 2008, Pluto entered Capricorn, the home sign of businesslike Saturn. It did not politely step through the front door, but immediately began to take a sledgehammer to the walls. It systematically drove us into the economic crash. The ceiling caved in entirely in September 2008. Saturn was not "home" at the time because he was away in a side battle with Uranus. The Little Guy was demanding Saturn let go of the reins and make some major changes in corporate structures. The Establishment (Saturn) had held power way too long and the people (Uranus) were getting angry about the raw deals they were dealt by those in the corporate structure. Uranus nominated and elected an entirely different type of leader (Obama) who promises government for the people. Meanwhile Uranus, now played by Obama, and Saturn, represented by a congress and its reluctance to change, continue in their tug of war through the third quarter of 2010. In November 2009, the stakes will ramp up quickly as the world shifts toward rapid inflation. A major drama among the three players tightens the battlefield in August 2010. A WWIII is unthinkable, but all the factors will be in place.

Are we having fun yet? I propose these archetypal energies will continue to engineer new and more complicated war games from now through eternity. After all, the gods are immortal and have nothing to lose. Humankind simply plays out the scenarios on the chessboard of the planet. The global crisis is now impossible to stop. The human ego has gained so much collective power that it threatens to annihilate the species.

If we are to survive, we must refuse to play clever war games that entertain the gods. We must elect thoughtful people who do not shoot from the hip. Then we must support them in every way we can. Archeologists have demonstrated that the survival of an endangered species is dependent upon its level of cooperation. It is time we look for mature solutions that will undermine the warring and return sanity to its rightful place among us. It can be done if enough of us choose this option.
