The Fountainhead

Based on the novel by Ayn Rand — with the author providing the screenplay herself — The Fountainhead stars Gary Cooper as Howard Roark, a visionary architect who refuses to compromise his artistic integrity, even if it would mean helping out those less fortunate. A box office flop that was also critically panned upon its initial release (The New Yorker called it “asinine and inept”), the film suffers from the miscasting of Cooper (although Raymond Massey is good as newspaper publisher Gail Wynand) and the peddling of Rand’s cold philosophies. Still, it’s 100 times better than the two-part screen version of Atlas Shrugged. Screening as part of Bechtler Museum of Modern Art’s Modernism + Film series. The event kicks off at 6 p.m. with a reception (a cash bar and free light bites in the Bechtler lobby) followed by the film and a panel discussion. (Matt Brunson)
