The Main Library film series It Happened One Year: Classic Movies of 1934 concludes with a screening of the first picture to headline the dance team of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers (they had been supporting players in the previous year’s Flying Down to Rio, the film that made the RKO Pictures suits see the writing on the wall — or, more accurately, the dancing on the screen — and scramble to find the duo their own vehicle). One of the best A&R offerings, this adaptation of the Broadway hit finds Rogers, anxious to divorce her stuffy workaholic husband, falling for hoofer Astaire. Fred sings Cole Porter’s timeless “Night and Day,” while supporting actors Edward Everett Horton, Eric Blore and Erik Rhodes are so hilarious that they were all asked to return for the dance duo’s best movie, 1935’s Top Hat. Nominated for five Academy Awards (including Best Picture), The Gay Divorcee earned the Oscar for Best Original Song (“The Continental”).
