The heels are alive

Saturday, May 12

Pop sweetie Gwen Stefani has found her solo niche in new wave dance and club music that's teased with hip-hop. OK, so her previous band, the ska-pop outfit No Doubt, was musically much more interesting, but Stefani's solo stuff is reliably quirky and catchy. Her sophomore release, Sweet Escape, swirls her pop around electronica, with help from Depeche Mode's Martin Gore, and strolls into R&B territory. She will perform with Akon and Lady Sovereign. 8 p.m. $10-$69.50. Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, 707 Pavilion Blvd. 704-549-5555.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
