The Immortal Iron Fist in good hands

The Immortal Iron Fist

Published by Marvel Comics. Written by Duane Swierczynski. Art by Travel Foreman.

The Deal: It's the latest issue of The Immortal Iron Fist by the comic's new creative team. In this story arc, Iron Fist is on the run from some ugly monster/man who has a habit of killing Iron Fists when they turn 33 years old.

The Good: I was a big fan of The Immortal Iron Fist when it was written by Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction, so when I heard they were passing the creative torch to Duane Swierczynski -- the writer behind that atrocious new Cable series -- I was a little concerned. But I'm pleased to say that after reading the last first three issues penned by Swierczynski, it seems Iron Fist is in good hands. Plot-wise, Swierczynski has picked up many of the dangling threads left by the comic's original creative team, showing that he's not afraid to play with someone else's toys. At the same time, he's amped up the action quotient on the book, which is good since this is a comic about martial arts, and has given Iron Fist a little more personality. Now when it comes to the art, I'm also happy to say that I'm digging the shadowy, stylized work of Travel Foreman. I hope he sticks around for a bit.

The Bad: So far, it's all good. But I'm keeping my eyes open for any signs of wackness. It's hard to believe this is written by the same dude responsible for Cable; that said, you never know when the crap from that book could slip in over here.

The Verdict: Iron Fist is still an enjoyable book. I'll keep buying it.
