THE MARIE ANTOINETTE PHILANTHROPIST OF THE YEAR
Gloria Pace King

Staff Pick

Never let it be said that United Way doesn’t give back to the community. In addition to the $21 million it doled out to local nonprofits last year, the charity awarded its CEO Gloria Pace King with a $1.2 million compensation package. Board leadership said officials worried that, without the eye-poppingly increased retirement fund payments included in the package, King might not be able to retire with at least 60 percent of her pay. King does, after all, have three homes to maintain. Meanwhile, demand is up at the city’s shelters and food banks are scrambling to keep up with community needs. Let’s hope that the agency’s board members — who, judging by their day jobs, aren’t exactly living paycheck-to-paycheck themselves — may see the irony of paying King so excessively. But don’t hold your breath.
