The release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not just a big deal for movie fans or for actor Hugh Jackman; it's also a big deal for comic book fans everywhere -- and that's because the movie heralds the coming of the annual event known as Free Comic Book Day.
Popping off on May 2, the day after Wolverine hits the big screen, Free Comic Book Day is a nationwide celebration designed to introduce new readers to the world of sequential art by giving away thousands of (you guessed it) free comics. Dozens of publishers -- from big guys like Marvel and DC to little companies like IDW and Antarctic Press -- take part in the one-day shindig, printing special comics custom-made for the occasion. (Check back next week to see my picks for the best Free Comic Book Day offerings, but at the moment I'm looking forward to getting my mitts on Green Lantern: Blackest Night No. 0.)
Locally, a number of Charlotte's comic book shops are adding to the complimentary fun. Manifest Discs (6239 South Blvd.), for example, will be offering deep discounts on its stock of back issues, on top of handing out freebies. (For more info, visit www.manifestdisc.com.) But probably the biggest area Free Comic Day event will take place at Heroes Aren't Hard to Find.
The popular comic retail store, located at 1957 E. 7th St., will have more than 14 of the industry's biggest artists on hand, drawing sketches and shaking hands while the Heroes staff passes out free comics; expect to see luminaries like Adam Hughes, Cully Hamner, Brian Stelfreeze, Andy Smith, Sanford Greene and many more live and in the flesh. Heroes opens its doors at 10 a.m., but the Free Comic Book Day sketch fest starts at 1 p.m. and goes until 5 p.m. Don't miss your chance to nab some no-cost periodicals and/or to meet some big-time comic pros.
