The Third Wave

Maybe high school students, so driven by peer pressure, ought to be the last people to wonder how the Holocaust could have happened. But in a new drama, The Third Wave, high school teacher Ron Jones has teamed together with playwright Joseph Robinette to recount how he tried to demonstrate the draw of totalitarianism and fascism — and how shockingly he succeeded beyond his expectations. The events occurred when Jones was a history teacher in Palo Alto, Calif. in 1967, during a time of war and social upheaval, when our peace-loving youth supposedly yearned for flower power, free love, and a chance to chill out. Yet, when Jones set up a fascist regime in his classroom, imposing rigid discipline, offering power and a sense of superiority to all who surrendered their freedom, students enthusiastically embraced his cultish dominion — from inside Cubberley High and from neighboring high schools. The conformity and violence veered out of control, and Jones himself was swept up in the tide of his power trip. Prepare to be additionally shocked by how well the Children’s Theatre’s Advanced Performance Company, an all-teen ensemble, performs.
