CD Review: SHOOTER JENNINGS

The Deal: Son of Waylon Jennings releases third studio album.

The Good: I've been living in the South for 15 years, but still can't say I'm a huge fan of country music. I've grown to love Johnny Cash and rockabilly, but feel lost at a Kenny Chesney concert. A few years back, I heard Shooter Jennings. I gave him a chance because of his famous father and have been listening ever since. Like his father, he's kind of the outlaw of country music. While some music is heavy on the country – "Tangled Up Roses," "Time Management 101" and "Old Friend" – others are soaked in Southern rock – "This Ol Wheel" and "Higher." The Wolf fits in well with Jennings' previous efforts – Put the O Back in Country and Electric Rodeo – taking an "if it ain't broke" attitude. Even his cover of Dire Straits' "Walk of Life" is countrified, but a nicely done retread. He gets help from The Oak Ridge Boys on "Slow Train."

The Bad: While the slow songs have to hit me when I'm in the right mood, Jennings' elbow grease still seeps through and show he's a solid musician in a variety of formats.

The Verdict: Country with the right twist of Southern rock and dirty grit – just what outlaw country should be. Jennings looks and sounds most comfortable on the electrified rock tunes, but sometimes, on the acoustic and mellow, he has the ability to conjure up his dad's spirit and truly shine.
