THEATER: Killer Joe

Friday, Feb. 13

It's strongly arguable that Carolina Actors Studio Theatre's latest production Killer Joe belongs on Lifetime television. I mean really, how many movies on the channel share a similar storyline as this? There's a family, in this case, the Smith family consisting of a mother, father, son and daughter. The son owes his drug dealer $6,000, so he plans to have his mother killed for her insurance money. The only thing that sets this play aside from those Lifetime plots is that it contains a somewhat humorous twist. Once the hired freelance killer enters the family's home, he won't leave. Through March 4. $18-$22. 8 p.m. Carolina Actors Studio Theatre, 1118 Clement Ave. 704-455-8542. www.nccast.com.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
