THEATER: Mary Poppins at Belk Theater

Wednesday, Aug. 25

It's really no wonder that wild children could become tame in the presence of Mary Poppins. She's the perfect fictional nanny since she makes things come alive, she can fly and, more importantly, teach a busy working father how to love and make time for his family. Combining original stories by P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney film, the Tony Award-winning Mary Poppins — produced by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh — opens at Belk Theater tonight. Pop in for some delightful tunes, like "A Spoonful of Sugar" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidociousis." $32.50 and up. Aug. 25-26, 7:30 p.m.; Aug. 27, 8 p.m.; Aug. 28, 2 p.m. & 8 p.m.; Aug. 29, 1 p.m. & 6:30 p.m.; Aug. 31-Sept. 2, 7:30 p.m.; Sept. 3, 8 p.m.; Sept. 4, 2 p.m. & 8 p.m.; Sept. 5, 1 p.m. & 6:30 p.m.; Sept. 7-9, 7:30 p.m.; Sept. 10, 8 p.m.; Sept. 11, 2 p.m. & 8 p.m.; Sept. 12, 1 p.m. & 6:30 p.m.; Sept. 14-16, 7:30 p.m.; Sept. 17, 8 p.m.; Sept. 18, 2 p.m. & 8 p.m.; Sept. 19, 1 p.m. & 6:30 p.m. $32.50 and up. • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
