THEATER: Shakespeare in Hollywood

Sunday, Feb. 1

If it wasn't bad enough that a large segment of our entertainment has become "hollywoodized" (yes, I am coining that word), then this is the official icing on the cake. Shakespeare in Hollywood has taken classic Shakespeare and spun in a modern twist. The famous fairies Oberon and Puck magically appear on the Hollywood set of Max Reinhardt's A Midsummer Night's Dream at Warner Brothers Studios. Meanwhile, a feisty flower playing Cupid starts making love connections. What's next, Paris Hilton as Juliet? Through Feb. 8. $10-$21. Feb. 1, 2:30 p.m.; Feb. 4-5, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 6-7, 8 p.m.; Feb. 8, 2:30 p.m. Theatre Charlotte, 501 Queens Road. 704-372-1000. www.theatrecharlotte.org.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
