THEATER: Two Gentlemen of Verona

Sunday, July 17

An Elizabethan extravaganza is progressing over at Winthrop University. Due to Shakespeare Carolina's partnership with the university's Department of Theatre and Dance, folks in Rock Hill are getting a double dose of Mr. William Shakespeare. It all starts with Two Gentlemen of Verona. In the soap-like spectacle, friendships are in conflict and the utter foolishness of love takes to extremes. Stay tuned for another play, The Tempest, coming in August. $10-$15. 3 p.m. Winthrop University (held in Johnson Theatre), 115 Johnson Hall, Rock Hill. 803-323-2287.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
