They're Awake!

Observer homeland security story proves not everyone there is comatose

Imagine our surprise when the Sunday, Sept. 12, issue of the Charlotte Observer featured a front page news feature on Carolinas communities' homeland security purchases. The venerable daily newspaper did an admirable job of grabbing a story idea initially written locally by CL's Tara Servatius about, oh, say, a year ago -- and we congratulate them for it. Over the past 12 or so months, Servatius has told Charlotteans about the waste of money involved in various Carolinas communities' use of "homeland security" money from the federal government. Our personal favorites were Burke County's $52,000 worth of night vision goggles and Gaston County's $111,380 WMD-sniffing robot. Apparently some editor at the O took time out from watching local TV news for story leads and read our humble publication long enough to recognize a theft-worthy topic. Glad we could help out, fellas.
