TODD RUNDGREN

“Todd is God!” proclaimed Rundgren’s fanatical followers throughout the ’70s and ’80s, while the mainstream either checked in for the occasional Brill Building-inspired pop nugget or scratched its head over side-band Utopia’s prog-inflected flights of fancy. A cursory run-through of Rundgren’s back catalog unearths the dazzling pop perfection of 1972’s Something/Anything?, where he beat Carole King and Laura Nyro at their own game. But a better gauge of Rundgren’s wayward genius is his 1973 follow-up, A Wizard, A True Star, a mind- and cluster-fuck of soul, glam and psych. A restless polymath, Rundgren produced artists as diverse as Badfinger, XTC and the New York Dolls with flawless results, even as his trickle of sporadic hits dried up. Becoming a pioneer in electronica, software development and online music delivery, Rundgren continued to release increasingly spotty albums containing one or two diamond-hard shards of brilliance. His 2013 opus State aims for the cutting edge dance music of Skrillex, but falls closer to Frankie Goes to Hollywood cheese. At 65, Rundgren may at long last be losing his edge — or the world has finally caught up with his fractured brilliance. (Pat Moran)
