Urinetown: The Musical

There’s a reason that the characters in Urinetown: The Musical are ... well ... pissed off. Not only are they forced to use pay-to-pee public toilets due to a water shortage, but they are also strictly punished for any disobedience — and sent off to a made-up place called “Urinetown,” never to be seen again. Written by Greg Kotis after traveling to Europe (where you really do have to cough up some change for public restrooms), the production is set to zippy, anthemic music by Mark Hollmann. The satirical comedy, somewhat sad at times, zeroes in on the townspeople rebelling against the government’s potty dictatorship. But in the end, there’s a lesson to be learned about flushing laws down the toilet. Often considered by schools but turned down because of fecal matter references, Winthrop University bravely showcases the production Oct. 2-6.
