Virtual: Excavations at Sarabay

Free
The University of North Florida excavation of the 16th century Mocama (Timucua) town of Sarabay, a settlement near Jacksonville, Florida mentioned in early French and Spanish accounts. Excavations recovered a wide range of artifacts, including Spanish ceramics and items depicting religious imagery. In the presumed center of the town, UNF students unearthed the outline of a large Indigenous post-in-the ground building, measuring about 20 meters in diameter. This presentation provides an overview of our excavations at Sarabay and situates the site within the broader Mocama landscape. Presented virtually.
