Weddings during football season

For me, Aug. 30 is a big day. Virginia Tech and East Carolina University are meeting in Charlotte to play at Bank of America Stadium. For a Hokie girl who goes back to VT for every home game, I'm anticipating this local game like a child does Christmas. Too bad I can't actually go to the game ... Christmas is cancelled.

I am a bridesmaid in one of my best friends' weddings in Blacksburg, Va. (on the same day the Hokies are coming to Charlotte). Meanwhile, another close friend is getting married that day as well ... in Harrisonburg, Va. I feel like Katherine Heigl from 27 Dresses, but in order to get from one wedding to the other, I'll need a helicopter.

As for college game day in the Q.C., there will be an influx of fans from both teams here, thus there should be a Virginia Tech designated bar, and one for ECU like there was with WVU at Have a Nice Day Café back when they played in the Continental Tire Bowl -- and back when Café was still open.

Meanwhile, there is a plethora of alumni from VT and ECU in Charlotte as is. BlackFinn (opening soon in the EpiCentre) has put in a bid to be the official Hokie Club bar, so I suggest going there after the game. I would if I could, but I'll be too busy driving up I-81 in a bridesmaid dress trying to make it from one reception to another in time to do the Cupid Shuffle.

A random Brittney revelation ... I realized with all these weddings I'm attending (seven this summer alone), that I am fortunate to have found such good friends and am happy for them that they've found such good men -- I adore each of my friends' hubbies.

But I also couldn't help but realize that none of my friends ever seem to like any of the guys I date. They're convinced that if I would've stayed with my ex-fiance, Kevin, that we would've ended up in our own dysfunctional version of Brittney and Kevin. Meanwhile, I asked my friends if they think I should wish my Mr. Big "Happy Birthday," and in sync they said, quoting Charlotte in Sex and the City, "Why? We curse the day he was born." And the night I introduced my friends to a guy I was hanging out with, one of them ended up smacking him in the head.

If we are our own worst critics then why, in matters of the heart, do we often need our friends to be the tough critics for us?

But more importantly, who schedules a wedding during football season?
