What Would You Rather Do?

Not easy to choose between two great neighborhoods

Would you rather stand in line in the cold to get into a club so you can be crowded or walk right on into a bar with only 10 other people there?

Would you rather ride in a taxi cab that wrecks into a wall or ride around in a Pedi-cab naked?

Would you rather get a Brazilian waxing by a drunken pirate or park in Uptown? I personally would take my chances with the pirate.

Would you rather go to NoDa or Plaza Midwood? Now that's a hard one ...

PM has Thomas Street Tavern, the Penguin, Petra's Piano Bar, Snug Harbor, Carolina Actors' Studio Theatre, Glossy, Yoga One, and art icons like Jim McGuire ... I can keep going like the energizer bunny.

PM is a culturally blended, eclectic 'hood that has so much character. With that said, when I heard about Holiday in the 'Hood I immediately went to put a p.m. in PM on my schedule, but then realized I was ordained to attend an out-of-town engagement party. Please be aware that the marriage epidemic is still going around.

I missed out on a good time. Apparently artists were serving up as much art as bartenders were beer. I heard tales of a green Santa, live mannequins at Lotus and Charlotte Roller Girls.

I just hope I don't get a wedding invitation to conflict with the next PM art crawl.

And in this corner ... NoDa has a bi-monthly gallery crawl that makes art alcoholic. There are six galleries including Hart-Witzen's, as well as the Evening Muse, Wine Up, Neighborhood Theatre, The Sanctuary, Prevue, Rat's Nest, Cabo Fish Taco, Smelly Cat (oh Smelly Cat) and Boudreaux – the best place to brunch and get some of the hair of the dog. Speaking of dogs, there's the Dog Bar, which has a fully stocked bar with bones in bowls rather than peanuts, so you don't have to leave your best friend at home. NoDa also has a new courtyard – a fabulous lighted patio at Solstice Tavern. And then there's Dolce Vita. Last time I went to the wine bar bikes were lined up in front; I didn't realize bikers were such wine enthusiasts. The lady sitting at the bar doing homework while drinking her Lambusco (cold red wine) was sure as hell a wine enthusiast.

And the winner is ... (drum roll please) It's a tie. Both 'hoods win. Besides, art is subjective. The arts are budding in Charlotte, and Plaza Midwood and NoDa are the gardens. Go dig up some cultural enrichment. But let's not negate The South End gallery crawls. Speaking of South End, can someone please explain to me why it always smells like a funnel cake?
