Where to find heritage poultry

Plus, sign up for holiday birds now

It all started with an egg. I bought organic chicken eggs directly from a farmer at a farmers market more than a decade ago, and one deeply golden sunny-side-up egg later, I was hooked. The next step was organic chickens. Then organic turkeys for Thanksgiving from my farmer (I'm part of a CSA group — Community Supported Agriculture), Sammy Koenigsberg of New Town Farms in Waxhaw.

If you want a free-range organic turkey for Thanksgiving, now is the time to sign up. Farmer Gary Sikes of Bountiful Harvest Farm in Anson County (www.bountifulharvestfarmnc.com) not only raises heritage breed chickens, such as the large white Canadian Chantecler, the white with black feathers Delaware (both $7/pound, fed non-GMO), and the large red Buckeye ($8/pound, fed a non-soy diet), but he will have Bourbon Red turkeys ($10/pound) for Thanksgiving 2013. He is currently taking reservations and the list is filling fast.

Sikes sells at the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market (1801 Yorkmont Road, Building A) on Saturday mornings. Since he raises all chickens and turkeys from his farm's eggs, he sells smaller turkey eggs ($10/dozen or $1 each), and offers an assortment of organic chicken eggs, too.

New at the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market this spring is Olive Branch Farms, specializing in organic duck ($7.25/pound). They are also in Building A on Saturday mornings. In addition to whole ducks, they sell the almost-impossible-to-find fresh duck liver. Only a few livers are required to make an exquisite pate.
