Where's Your Pride?

Saturday, August 25

Having the largest LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) population between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta is a great honor for Charlotte. Are you freakin' serious?! This is the Bible Belt, for goodness sakes! The only things we're proud of are the exorbitant amount of churches, a big pitcher of iced tea, and grandma's recipe for fried chicken. However, that will not stop the United for Equality: Pride Charlotte 2007 celebration from making dancing "queens" of all of us today. Music, dance, film, theater and more have been planned with Gateway Village serving as ground zero. Come and join our brothers and sisters in their pursuit of happiness. Times vary. Prices vary. Gateway Village, 800 W. Trade St. 704-333-0144. www.pridecharlotte.org.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
