With Us Or Against Us

Why does America hate America?

Nine days after 9/11, President Bush declared to a Joint Session of Congress, "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists." Since then, we've come to understand that what Bush really meant was, "Either you are with me or you are with the terrorists." Put another way, if you don't unquestioningly back the President, you hate America; I guess complex times call for simple-minded solutions.

In an August 5 Op-Ed piece in the New York Times (a paper that obviously hates America), Bruce Springsteen wrote, "Like many others, in the aftermath of 9/11, I felt the country's unity. . . .I supported the decision to enter Afghanistan and I hoped that the seriousness of the times would bring forth strength, humility and wisdom in our leaders. Instead, we dived headlong into an unnecessary war in Iraq, offering up the lives of our young men and women under circumstances that are now discredited. We ran record deficits, while simultaneously cutting and squeezing services like after-school programs. We granted tax cuts to the richest 1% (corporate bigwigs, well-to-do guitar players), increasing the division of wealth that threatens to destroy our social contract with one another and render mute the promise of "one nation indivisible.'" Why does Springsteen hate America?

Also on August 5, a group funded by the biggest Republican campaign donor in Texas and calling itself "Swift Boat Veterans For Truth" began running an anti-America-hater-John Kerry ad. In it the group claims that Kerry lied to get one of his two decorations for bravery and two of his three purple hearts. One of the vets who appeared in the ad (and the only one who served with Kerry) later recanted his accusation. Other Swift Boat Veterans, ones who actually served directly with Kerry, have refuted the group's claims, and Republican Sen. John McCain strongly denounced the group's actions and statements. Why do John McCain and Swift Boat Veterans who actually served with Kerry hate America?

Which brings up the fact that according to several polls, a majority of Americans now say the war in Iraq was a big mistake. Why do Americans. . . oh, never mind.

By the way, August 5 also saw the President sign a huge defense appropriations bill. In prepared remarks Bush said, "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They znever stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."

Our Brave New President -- you just gotta love him; he makes writing a column like this so easy.
