Word On The Street

Who looks weirder, Democratic US Senate candidate Erskine Bowles or Republican gubernatorial candidate Patrick Ballantine?

Paul Thornton
Gym Manager
"Definitely Ballantine. He's got a look on his face like a baby sitting on a hotplate."

Chante Dodson
Tax Attorney
"I like him, but it's gotta be Bowles. I mean, look up "pencil-neck geek' in the dictionary, and there's his picture."

Mary Cannon
Librarian
"Ballantine reminds me of this little bug-eyed boy used to live across the street, and Bowles' head looks like a light bulb, so I guess it's a toss-up."

Landon Miles
Laundromat Owner
"I'd say Bowles "cause his glasses make him look wall-eyed -- kind of like Jesse Helms but, like, not a goober."

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
