Wrestling With Identity

Thursday, April 19

Can you guess the name of the mighty character from Homer's The Iliad who takes two star athletes down in The Wrestling Season? It's none other than Rumor, which labels Matt and Luke as a gay couple at their high school. Searching for your own identity as a teen is tough enough without having to battle a vicious rumor mill. Ask Melanie, stigmatized as the school slut. Amid the athletic action, wrestling becomes emblematic of the struggle to survive in a combative environment that's always pinning labels on anybody who doesn't master the sport of gossip. Wrestling Season is the first Children's Theatre of Charlotte show at ImaginOn to be targeted at teens -- and their first-ever mainstage effort to feature arena staging. Part of the audience sits in bleachers onstage at Wachovia Playhouse. Through April 29, Thursday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. Recommended for 13 and up -- all tickets $14. 704-973-2828.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
