Wrist candy in the Queen City

Posted By on Thu, Jun 28, 2012 at 10:07 AM

The art of mixing and matching bracelets and watches is the trend of the moment for your wrist, with sizeable stacks gracing the arms of celebrities such as Mary-Kate Olsen and Lauren Conrad. The goal is to strike a balance between cleverly chosen and seemingly effortless, for a look that makes as much of a statement as your outfit but still seems like an afterthought.

Pastels and neons, though at opposite ends of the spectrum, are on point right now. Not into the colored denim trend, or too hesitant to try a flashy neon shirt? Adding a pop of color to a monochromatic wrist is a great way to introduce these colors into your wardrobe. Accessories are the best way to make a big update on your outfit, but a small impact on your wallet. Here's where you can build your stacks on stacks on stacks.

Francesca's Collections, in Blakeney or SouthPark Mall, is accessory overload. They carry the latest trends in jewelry, so you'll find it hard to stop stacking.

Getting crafty with consignment finds

Posted By on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 2:10 PM

Maybe I've been looking at Pinterest for too long, or maybe I'm inspired by my recent consignment finds, but I'm feeling crafty.

Keeping in the spirit of my recent consignment craze, I meandered on into the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store in Matthews to see what hidden treasures I could transform. And what do ya know, the right side of my brain kicked in to high gear, and instead of seeing broken chairs, battered bookshelves and busted windowpanes, I felt a DIY comin' on.

Item #1: White Bookcase

SAM_5451.JPG

Makeover 1: You see a bookcase, I see a mini bar. Tomato, tomahto.
I understand: you need a way to make your drinking habit look classy and understated. My suggestion is spray painting the entire bookcase black, because everyone knows black makes anything instantly chic. And smaller.

Deconstruct a little and move things around. Try removing the top shelf and placing a mirror against the back wall, filling the void and creating depth. This new large shelf can be a place to display your bottles (or your empty bottles, so you can pretend to do something artsy with those, too.) Choose a patterned fabric to make a small curtain to cover the bottom shelf, where you can hide supplies and essentials. The two middle shelves are the perfect place to display your glassware on serving trays, or line the shelf with patterned scarves. Or your shot glass collection. Whatever.

Makeover 2: There's a desk under all that junk...
Don't read enough books to fill your bookcase (or your head?) Turn it into a desk. If you remove a low shelf, you can add a sheet of wood to stick out and attach two table legs to the underside. You'll have a new surface sticking out of your shelf, and a new place to pile crap on top of. For step-by-step instructions, check out this link.

Admit It: You shop at the JLC Wearhouse

Posted By on Thu, Jun 21, 2012 at 2:54 PM

Yesterday I was absentmindedly flipping through a rack of clothes, not paying much attention to what I was passing up but waiting for something to catch my eye. And then I saw it.

Amidst the designer consignment clothes stood out a pair of marigold yellow and hot pink pants. With puppy faces all over it. Oh, and better yet - they were men's pants. If Lisa Frank and Lilly Pulitzer joined forces, this would be thegloriously loud, delightfully tacky result.

This and other treasures await you at the JLC Wearhouse in Plaza Midwood.

What's so special about the JLC Wearhouse, you say? Been there, done that. You've probably passed it dozens of times since it's right off of Central Avenue. Or maybe you've even been there, filling your closet with designer items for less.

I'm bringing this issue to light because it's something we need to talk about. We can't keep avoiding it like this.

Searching Instagram for Charlotte

Posted By on Wed, Jun 20, 2012 at 10:06 AM

The Instagram photo app is easily the best thing to happen to my amateur photo skills. Suddenly, the most mundane objects become stylish works of art with the addition of one of dozens of filters to choose from. Snap a pic, add a filter, and feel like a pro. The only thing I need worry about is a witty caption and appropriate tag.

So what happens when you search the tag #charotte or #CLT on Instagram? My search revealed a series of snapshots ranging from nostalgic Charlotte Hornets gear to nighttime peeks from the rooftops of buildings, looking down on our glittering city.

Clueless to Flawless

Posted By on Fri, Jun 15, 2012 at 9:08 AM

As nice as it is to have inner beauty and all, sometimes you just want to look HOT. And not just hot, but pretty, perfect, beautiful... flawless. Makeup artist Joy Nichelle Randall, owner of private studio Flawless Makeup Art, understands.

Randall has helped models, celebrities, socialites and brides put their best face forward. She's worked with big names like Fantasia Barrino, singers Maya and Jojo, former America's Next Top Model contestants, and for big brands such as VH1, MTV, and NASCAR. Her work can be seen in publications such as People Magazine. She also offers group classes, brow grooming, individual eyelash application, and other perks for studio members.

Randall's philosophy as a makeup artist is that it's not the makeup you use, but the artist who really makes the difference. My philosophy of a smoky eye is smudging some black across my lid and hoping the room is dark enough to make me look seductive. As she puts it, "I produce ideas."

As lovely as it would be to have a makeup artist to paint me every morning, that's impossible. Thankfully, Flawless is holding a soft opening for their new studio on June 23. The event is by appointment only, as she maintains exclusivity and privacy for her clientele. She will be offering services such as makeup application and BYOB (bring your own makeup bag) so you, too, can go from clueless to Flawless.

Cocktails and your closet

Posted By on Thu, Jun 14, 2012 at 3:51 PM

Half of the fun of going out for dinner and drinks is dressing up, am I right ladies? I decided to translate some of my favorite spots into outfits to match the vibe and décor of the place, so you can slip in seamlessly. Caution, these outfits just might have you "spillin while you sippin."

Osso Restaurant & Lounge: Known to everyone from here on out as the place where Emily and Ryan from The Bachelorette had their first date. Aside from that, Osso has a luxe vibe that warrants a glass of wine to accompany the sophisticated Italian menu. You'll feel as classy as your Chianti in a draped dress and snakeskin clutch. The best accessory is obviously the glass in your hand though, daahling.

Enso Asian Bistro: The EpiCentre location means you'll see and be seen when dining at this Asian-inspired restaurant. The drinks should be as strong as your sex appeal in a fitted floral dress as you dine on handcrafted sushi.

Wanna be a model for the day?

Posted By on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 4:33 PM

Do you need a fabulous new look? Well, even if you don't think you do, grab a friend and head over to the Clarins Models Wanted event in Belk SouthPark starting tomorrow. It's complimentary (with a $50 pre-sell).

Clarins is the No. 1 skincare line in Europe, and this event is all about promoting the line on their Facebook and Twitter pages. Can you say 15 minutes of fame? They're looking for fresh faces in only about a dozen select cities, and of course, the Queen City made the list.

clarins-instant-summer-makeup.jpg

From June 14-16, participants of the event will be treated like celebrities, beginning with red carpet photos by Heba Salama (Biggest Loser Families Season 6 At Home winner and Chapel Hill Magazine nominee for Photographer of the Year), expert beauty advice from internationally known makeup artist Ryan Willis and a personal mini photoshoot on the Clarins Model of the Month set. Each "model" will receive a complimentary flash drive containing all of the photos from the shoot.

The appointments are limited, so reserve yours today by contacting the Clarins counter at Belk SouthPark. 704-364-4251.

Styleascope: Gemini

Posted By on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 10:04 AM

Gemini (May 21- June 20)

Styleascope is a lighthearted horoscope that puts a spotlight on local fashion. Believe it or not, Zodiac signs say a lot about a person. They speak to an individual's strengths, weaknesses, romantic attractions, values, desires and ... fashion sense? Yep! The stars can serve as a personal stylist, too. No sign is alike, so your wardrobes shouldn't be either. My aim is to blend fashion and the cosmos by providing a guide to show you what's in store at local boutiques (and why your sign is telling you to wear it). Instead of the runway, I'll use the stars as my guide. So, what's your sign?

Name: Sara Delaney
Birthday: June 16 (Shares the sign with boho chic twins Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen)
Age: 22
Do you read your horoscope?: "I do read my horoscope. I like to have an idea of how the world is going to play out for me that day. Whether it says it's going to be a good or bad day, it's interesting to see what happens."

The Gemini is quite possibly the most intriguing sign out there. Its name is derived from the Latin word for "twins" and is commonly associated with the twins Castor and Pollux, from Greek Mythology. Because of the sign's versatile nature, it's hard to pin a Gemini down on paper. Its duality often labels them as having erratic mood changes or a split personality. But many Geminis are just open to change, which surely translates into a style that varies. As an air sign, Geminian personality is a match to its natural element. Unpredictable as a feather afloat, you can never really be sure what a Gemini will do next, especially when it comes to the execution of an outfit. One thing that's certain is that a Gemini loves to stand out. They're drawn to bold colors like shades of yellow, orange and magenta. Because their ruling parts are the hands, fingers and arms, you'll most likely see a Gemini donning rings and bangles as accessories. The witty, outgoing and adventurous Gemini loves to charm in conversation and style. With a creative edge, the Gemini is a natural born trendsetter who isn't afraid to take risks. Open a Gemini's closet and you'll stumble upon a wardrobe that's as diverse and eclectic as the wearer. (Source)
