Bowling lanes are made for fashion shows

Posted By on Fri, Nov 9, 2012 at 9:00 AM

I've always felt like bowling lanes were MADE for sliding down on — their slickness begs for it.

Well, if you're looking to see someone breaking the bowling alley rules, head out to 10 Park Lanes for its Pin Up, Pin Down event, happening on Sunday, Nov. 11. Decade fashion never dies, and that evening, looks from the 1940s and '50s (with a modern twist, of course) will be showcased by models down the runway — the bowling lanes.

Local boutiques will share their interpretation of the modern day pin-up girl and all items featured will be available for purchase at their respective boutiques. Participating stores include: Blush, Blvd at Southend, Vivian B, Vestique, Summerbird, JT Posh, Sloan, Nordstrom and Solstice. In addition to their clothes, the hair and makeup of each model will reflect the pin-up era too.

Guests can expect cat eye glasses, high waisted shorts, pumps and menswear. “Using the 40s and 50s as our inspiration, we've created a runway show that captures the modern day pin-up girl. A girl that exudes confidence, adventure, and charisma. I am proud to launch FashionFrontRunner with these ideals in mind," says Merritt Rea of FashionFrontRunner, who will handle the event's styling and production.

Proceeds benefit Levine Cancer Institute’s Carolinas Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

Tickets are $10 and up and can be purchased here. Doors at 6 p.m., fashion show at 8:15 p.m.

Photos: Resurrection: A Forum on Sustainable Fashion

Posted By on Tue, Sep 4, 2012 at 5:37 PM

Last night, The PPL hosted Resurrection: A Forum on Sustainable Fashion at Packard Place (an awesome space, by the way!). Seven local designers came out on stage to chat with host Mike Watson about their aesthetics, how they approach recycled fashion and gave details on how they created their looks. According to one statistic, the average American throws away 68 pounds of clothing and textiles a year.

Seeing as the Democrats are all about saving the Earth, the forum on sustainability was fitting for the day before the DNC began.

Designers showcasing their work included: Ana Dee of Moonshine Apparel, 13-year-old Katie Seeds, Caroline Cook Frers of Frock Shop, Cigi Guz with her Speakeasy Boutique, Andre Jarrid's The Style Monster, Caleb Clark of Enemy to Fashion and artist Flavia Lovatelli of Artesa.

From revamping pieces found at Goodwill to creating a chic, trendy garment out of tablecloth linens, the lesson of the evening was simple: Recycle your clothing.

The shopping experience can be a trying one. Whether you're in possession of that "shop till you drop" passion for it, or you prefer a get-in-and-get-out approach, shoving one's way through throngs of clearance-scouting consumers is few people's idea of a fun and easy time.

Enter the trunk show. Usually taking place in an intimate setting, vendors present patrons with a selection of merchandise available for purchase. If you've never been to one, now's your chance: Olive Boutique will sell its wares on its Trunk Show Sunday, hosted at Re Salon.

The event will be held on Sunday, Aug. 26, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. All of the Olive items will be in stock, including sale items and a restock of some favorites. New fall fashions will also be available for attendees to try on. Those looking for a little pick me up will be pleased to know that mimosa swilling will be in full swing.

Just click on the Evite to RSVP.

Style Night Out: Save the Date! 9/13/12

Posted By on Fri, Aug 3, 2012 at 10:36 AM

If you attended Fashion's Night Out last year at the Metropolitan, you know what a treat that was for Charlotte's fashion obsessed. I'm talking 26 local boutiques, salons, makeup artists, 120 models and over 1,800 guests.

Instagram shot from last years event

FNO is a global initiative created by the fashion industry's biggest influencers, CFDA and Vogue Magazine. Now in its 4th year, this event continues to create awareness for neighborhood boutiques while bringing the community together to support these businesses in the most stylish way.

I attended FNO at the Met in 2011, which was THE most popular of all FNO events held in the city, and even had an opportunity to grace the stage myself. As a pre-host of the fashion show, I was able to get a bird's eye view of everything, and let me tell you, the experience was simply electric. I had no idea just how many fashionable men and women there are in the Q.C. From boutique owners, models and stylists to local celebrities, Charlotte socialites and the trendy "gal-about-town," they all came out to play dressed in their chic-est looks.

This year, instead of celebrating FNO on Sept 6th during the undeniable chaos that is sure to takeover the city during the Democratic National Convention, Charlotte will have its very own night of style. Introducing ... the Queen City's 1st Annual "Style Night Out."

Style Night Out was created by local trendsetter and producer of FNO at the Met (2011), Effie Loukas. SNO will be the mirror image of FNO (with the exception of the date change) and will encompass the same energy as last year's celebration. But, if you know Loukas like I do, it will be even bigger and better.

For 2012, SNO will be at held Morrison Shopping Center in SouthPark on Thursday, Sept. 13, so be sure to mark your calendars. With 37 local boutiques participating and 148 models this year, it's gonna be a not-to-be-missed event!

Green Jeans Consignment hosts style battle

Posted By on Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 12:57 PM

I am forever a fan of boxing. Yes, I know that's a little strange as a fashionista, but it's just something about getting in that ring that excites me. Then again, who doesn't love a good battle? Well, what about a fashion battle?

To launch the new location for Green Jeans Consignment sale in SouthPark, co-owners and sisters Cindy Williams and Dana Degan will host their very first "Style Challenge." It's a wonderful opportunity for three lucky stylists to raise awareness for their favorite charity as well as to show off their styling skills.

On Thursday, Aug. 2, just before the Green Jeans Consignment pre-sale begins, challenging stylists will be granted one hour to create a head-to-toe look for their models. The catch? The ensemble cannot cost more than $100. Shopping on a budget? Now that's my kind of shopping.

The lucky stylists for this "fashion battle," Christine Nelson (Simply Sassy), Marguerite Rupar (Doncaster Charlotte) and Whitley Hamlin (The Queen City Style) will rise to the challenge no doubt, as these ladies will have more than 20,000 items to choose from. I'm talking thousands of brand names on everything from shoes to accessories and dresses to, of course, jeans.

And, you can play a part in this "battle" too. It's time to pull out your judging pen: the Green Jeans fans will serve as the judges. The stylist with the most votes will win $100 toward the charity of her choice, and her model will be given the winning outfit. This is an event jam packed with fun, all while you shop and since it attracts over 1000 shoppers each season, it's one you certainly don't want to miss!

Move over Magic Mike: Save the Date for BRIEF! A Fete For Fashion

Posted By on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 11:32 AM

Magic Mike, move over. Ladies, save the date, clear your calendar, and grab your girlfriends. Promising “the hottest male underwear on the hottest male bodies,” BRIEF! A Fete for Fashion is back in the buff on Aug. 11.

BRIEF! is a male underwear/swimwear fashion show, paraded down the runway on fine specimens of male eye candy. Channing Tatum may have the moves, but BRIEF’s got the dudes. 24 of them, to be exact, all showing off down-there designs from Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren and others.

Save your dollar bills and put it toward a greater cause. BRIEF! benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. In years past, the event has raised more than $50,000 for Cystic Fibrosis. Now in its third year, Dan Mauney, the mastermind behind it all, hopes to exceed that amount and have even more in attendance.

Sponsors and donations of runway-ready underwear are being accepted, and VIP tickets are available for purchase. Here’s hoping the show isn’t brief as well. In anticipation of the upcoming event, here's a quick clip to get you hyped.

The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012 at Extravaganza Depot, located on 1610 N. Tryon St.

Clueless to Flawless

Posted By on Fri, Jun 15, 2012 at 9:08 AM

As nice as it is to have inner beauty and all, sometimes you just want to look HOT. And not just hot, but pretty, perfect, beautiful... flawless. Makeup artist Joy Nichelle Randall, owner of private studio Flawless Makeup Art, understands.

Randall has helped models, celebrities, socialites and brides put their best face forward. She's worked with big names like Fantasia Barrino, singers Maya and Jojo, former America's Next Top Model contestants, and for big brands such as VH1, MTV, and NASCAR. Her work can be seen in publications such as People Magazine. She also offers group classes, brow grooming, individual eyelash application, and other perks for studio members.

Randall's philosophy as a makeup artist is that it's not the makeup you use, but the artist who really makes the difference. My philosophy of a smoky eye is smudging some black across my lid and hoping the room is dark enough to make me look seductive. As she puts it, "I produce ideas."

As lovely as it would be to have a makeup artist to paint me every morning, that's impossible. Thankfully, Flawless is holding a soft opening for their new studio on June 23. The event is by appointment only, as she maintains exclusivity and privacy for her clientele. She will be offering services such as makeup application and BYOB (bring your own makeup bag) so you, too, can go from clueless to Flawless.

Posted By on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 4:33 PM

Do you need a fabulous new look? Well, even if you don't think you do, grab a friend and head over to the Clarins Models Wanted event in Belk SouthPark starting tomorrow. It's complimentary (with a $50 pre-sell).

Clarins is the No. 1 skincare line in Europe, and this event is all about promoting the line on their Facebook and Twitter pages. Can you say 15 minutes of fame? They're looking for fresh faces in only about a dozen select cities, and of course, the Queen City made the list.

clarins-instant-summer-makeup.jpg

From June 14-16, participants of the event will be treated like celebrities, beginning with red carpet photos by Heba Salama (Biggest Loser Families Season 6 At Home winner and Chapel Hill Magazine nominee for Photographer of the Year), expert beauty advice from internationally known makeup artist Ryan Willis and a personal mini photoshoot on the Clarins Model of the Month set. Each "model" will receive a complimentary flash drive containing all of the photos from the shoot.

The appointments are limited, so reserve yours today by contacting the Clarins counter at Belk SouthPark. 704-364-4251.

Fashion and horses: A day at The Queen's Cup Steeplechase

Posted By on Tue, May 1, 2012 at 3:31 PM

The Queen's Cup Steeplechase is the premiere horse race event to attend if you live in and around The Queen City. Mineral Springs is just a short drive away, and I promise you, the experience is well worth it. There's tailgating, Jack Russell terrier races, pony rides for the kids, lots of fashion to take in and of course, six exciting horse races that you can actually bet on if you're feeling a little lucky.

photo-1.jpg

Each year, the tailgate/table decor competition heats up, but what excites US is the best hat contest. This year this stylish lady took home the grand prize. Awesome right? I think she was channeling Lady Gaga.
