McCain calls for a summer 'gas-tax holiday': Sen. John McCain called for the federal government to suspend the 18.4 cent federal gas tax and 24.4 cent diesel tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day. He also called for the United States to stop adding to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and thus lessen to some extent the worldwide demand for oil.

U.S. seeing worst food inflation in 17 years: Although U.S. households still use a smaller portion of their expenses on food than other countries, like Egypt and Vietnam, the price of food is going up. In fact, U.S. food prices rose 4 percent in 2007, compared with an average 2.5 percent annual rise for the last 15 years, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. And the agency says 2008 could be worse, with a rise of as much as 4.5 percent.

Law suit: Easley broke law by deleting e-mail: Ten news organizations, including The Charlotte Observer, filed a law suit against Gov. Mike Easley and his administration, alleging that he authorized "the systematic deletion, destruction or concealment of e-mail messages sent from or received by the Governor's Office," which they say violates the state's Public Records Law.
