Occupy Charlotte officially breaks up with itself

Posted By on Mon, Jan 2, 2012 at 6:44 PM

A day after Occupy Charlotte's three-month anniversary, nine members of the group announced plans to form a new organization, the People's Coalition of the Carolinas.

The move came three days after four men were arrested at Old City Hall where Occupy Charlotte has been camping since Oct. 8, a week after it formed. The men were arrested after allegedly setting fire to two American flags that had flanked the OC information desk.

The Charlotte City Council is expected to move on an ordinance that may ban camping on public property soon. In fact, the council is getting an update Tues., Jan. 3 at a workshop.

Watch members of the splinter group read their statement and explain what's next for them, as well as the reaction from a current occupier:

Monday night's Occupy Charlotte general assembly was moved to a nearby coffee shop due to the cold weather. About 20 attended, including Alex Tyler, one of the four arrested Friday after burning two American flags in front of the camp site.

The mood was solemn. They discussed whether or not they should continue camping, pondered moving it and even discussed day-camping, like Councilman Andy Dulin suggested they do last week.

"I don't think we can deny that we've lost some momentum," Don Faix, a 65-year-old retiree and occupier who doesn't camp. For about two and a half months, he's driven to the occupation most days from Concord to man the group's information desk.
