Lil' Graham wants to stage a big ol' fundamentalist "festival" in Charlotte (large, preaching-intensive events that Biily Graham, AKA Big Graham, called "crusades" in his heyday).
Tim Funk at the Observer reported that Franklin Graham and his staff are in preliminary discussions with local churches to gauge the level of interest in Billy's son putting on a huge to-do in Charlotte in 2015. Big Graham held four crusades in Charlotte, the last one of which, in 1996, drew an average 84,000 people per night to the uptown stadium, for four nights. I'm no savant of crowd prediction, but I'll bet you three Baghavad Gitas to a Bible that Lil' Graham can't draw that many people here.
Cyclists and art-lovers alike will soon be taking to the streets of Uptown to distribute their expressive, artistic propaganda to an unsuspecting public for ... free.
It's all thanks to Papergirl, an organization founded by Aisha Rominger in Berlin, Germany in 2006. It was formed as a response to laws that equated putting up posters in public with illegal graffiti. Since its initial rise, Papergirl has spread around the world, infiltrating the art scenes of cities such as San Francisco, Vancouver, Barcelona, Leeds, Mexico City, Cape Town and, of course, Charlotte.
As per the case of the original incarnation, Papergirl-Charlotte (started in 2010) operates by calling for locals and passionate artists around the country to submit artwork. The pieces are collected, displayed in a gallery, and then distributed as rolled-up packages via a troop of bicyclists that deliver to random folks in the streets.
Papergirl allows for anyone to submit any kind of art (writings, paintings, sketches, textiles, etc.) to showcase in a gallery, without an elite selection process. And, despite the name, volunteers and artists don't need to be female either. Like the city's recent busking surge, Papergirl is another exciting way of delivering art and culture to the public.
Papergirl-Charlotte artwork will be on display from June 7-8 at Pura Vida Worldly Art in NoDa.

There's a reason the counterculture favorite 2001: A Space Odyssey was released back in 1968 with the tagline "The Ultimate Trip." I can't promise any trippy drugs will be on hand, but I can guarantee a great motion picture experience will potentially take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at AMC Concord Mills.
I say "potentially" because the folks at The Film Find are trying to set up a screening of this Stanley Kubrick masterpiece through Tugg, which can only solidify showings if enough people reserve tickets. (For clear details on how Tugg works, go here.) As of this moment, 69 more people are needed to make this screening happen; the deadline for reserving tickets is June 13.
Admission is $10. The event will also include door prizes and a possible post-screening Q&A session. For more details, or to reserve seats, go here.
This monthly column offers a sampling of the major releases coming soon to Blu-ray and/or DVD.

Last September, Temperance League released its debut LP: a concise little collection of two-minute scorchers that split the difference between power-pop, bar-rock, and Springsteen-meets-Strummer rabble-rouser anthems. This fall, the Charlotte rockers aim to release another. As part of our new series on local bands' album-making processes, we caught up with vocalist Bruce Hazel and guitarist (and "band co-pilot," as Hazel puts it) Shawn Lynch to talk about their studio time - and the light-speed turnaround on this new release.
Bruce Hazel: It was a pretty simple decision. It was almost immediately after the release of the last LP. We had new songs that we wanted to record. We started recording back in February and we finished it up this past weekend. Hopefully between mixing and record pressing we will have it available by September.
Shawn Lynch: Also, why not? Most bands only make one album, then either break up or wait two to three years to make another one. We had the songs, so we might as well make another LP. That's what we're best at - playing shows and making records.
When I walk into an executive office on the fourth floor of Belk at South Park Mall, I am introduced to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. In the midst of an onslaught of press interviews, Newton appears ready to get on with his afternoon appearance, weary from answering the same questions over and over.
"First, as an Auburn alum, let me say, 'War Eagle!'" A smile cracks as he yells, "War Eagle!!!" and reaches out for a second, much heartier handshake. As the quarterback who led the 2010 Auburn University football team to its first national championship since 1957, Newton has quite a home in the hearts of fans. And because he recently went back to the school to finish his degree in sociology, he's also earned more respect.
But I'm not there to talk about Auburn, I am chatting with Newton about his new clothing line with Belk, Made. It's no surprise - Newton's not making or designing the clothes himself, he's simply attaching his name to a line he approves of in order to help his (and Belk's) brand and business.
"In the great words of Jay-Z, 'I'm a business, man,'" Newton says. The line includes everything from shorts and shoes to suits and T-shirts.
I have to ask if there were any plans to make a tear-away T-shirt - one that would make it easier for him to unleash his Superman touchdown pose.
