Filter at Time Warner Cable Uptown Ampitheatre tonight (6/2/13)

FILTER
Oh Richard... what happened to you? You, Richard Patrick, were a touring guitarist for Nine Inch Nails before heading out on your own to start your own industrial-based alt-rock outfit, Filter. Your song "Hey Man Nice Shot" from the 1995 album Short Bus became an anthem of sorts. You followed it up in 1999 with Title of Record, which included the heavy-handed "Welcome to the Fold," but also "Take a Picture." Is that where things went wrong? Damn the man, Richard. Sure, people can appreciate a good ballad, but you need to stick to your guns and remember what put you on the map. Who cares if you're 45, you can still scream with the best of them. Your seventh album, The Sun Comes Out Tonight, hits stores two days after your Charlotte concert. Sure, there are reminders of the old days (lead track "Burn It" and "Self Inflicted"), but the album is weighted down with sap. Meanwhile, the songs which do put some punch back in your repertoire all kinda sound the same. Drop the formulaic songwriting patterns. Scrap the sweetness. And for fuck's sake don't hit the road with a few '90s has-beens who are trying to reclaim their own momentary glory. Oh, wait ... too late. With Everclear, Live and Sponge. $27-$57.85. June 2, 7:30 p.m. Time Warner Cable Uptown Amphitheatre, 1000 N.C. Music Factory Blvd.

The Kernal at the Evening Muse tonight (6/1/13)

THE KERNAL
Joe Garner, leader of this Jackson, Tenn., outfit, comes from quality country stock; his father was a Grand Ole Opry bassist and bandleader for Del Reeves and the Kendalls. In tribute after his father's 2007 death, Garner refitted his music from its singer-songwriter folkie fare, donned the red suit his pop wore with Reeves, and turned to what the quartet calls "honky tonk with a subterranean message." Recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis and produced by Jeff Powell (Bob Dylan, Big Star, Centromatic), the band's sparkling debut, Farewellhello, builds around four-part harmonies, old school country storytelling, and guitars that jangle and twang as they weave around the melodies. The songs vary enough to recall early Tom Petty, the Burrito Brothers, a less psychedelics-influenced Beachwood Sparks, and, of course, more trad country fare. The further the band goes down this road and away from the cutesy folk, the better they get. With Halley Anna and Elonzo's Jeremy Davis. $8-$10. June 1, 10:30 p.m. Evening Muse, 3227 N. Davidson St. 704-376-3737.
