Quynh Vantu: Thresholds at McColl Center for Visual Art: This is more than just a new exhibit - it's a transformation. Thresholds, created by architect Quynh Vantu, has recreated the first floor gallery and entryways of McColl Center for Visual Art by using textiles, light and other mediums to form passageways and other structural formations. Somewhat experimental in nature, this installation blends art and architecture, creating a visually stimulating environment. There's a pretty dreamy, innovative vibe going on, too. Free admission. Opening reception on Jan. 24, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Jan. 24-March 29 McColl Center for Visual Art, 721 N. Tryon St. 704-332-5535. www.mccollcenter.org.

Emerging Artists' Exhibit at Nancy Couick Studios & Gallery: The gallery, named after artist Nancy Couick, presents an assortment of new artwork by emerging artists during this reception. Couick, who also teaches classes at the gallery, is seasoned in landscapes. This includes picturesque Italian villages and colorful botanical gardens. Expect to see similar environments and portraits by the artists in this exhibit. Free admission. Opening reception on Jan. 24, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Nancy Couick Studios & Gallery, 10100 Park Cedar Drive, Suite 188. 704-541-6944. www.nancycouick.com.
