First Drip (10/10/14): Judge denies GOP request to intervene in Amendment One-challenging lawsuits, register to vote today, more

A jude has denied a request from Republican lawmakers to give their lawyers until Oct. 17 to prepare arguments to intervene in lawsuits that challenge North Carolina's ban on same-sex marriage. Instead, lawyers have until noon today. Chief U.S. District Court Judge William Osteen Jr. could strike down Amendment One before the start of the weekend.

Today is also the deadline to register to vote in the November elections. "The state has for years allowed voters to register during the early voting period and cast a ballot in the same visit. But the N.C. General Assembly approved election changes in 2013 that end the practice, a move opponents say will reduce voter participation." Find our more information about registering here.

A teenager and a man who has dedicated his life to protecting children won this year's Nobel Peace Prize. You'll remember Malala Yousafzai, 17, as the Pakistani girl the Taliban shot who turned into an international symbol of hope and courage. Kailash Satyarthi of India has worked for years against child labor and child trafficking.

Taiwan's president delivered a significant blow to China's Communist leadership when he said it should try Democracy, starting with Hong Kong. His comments come after weeks of anti-Communist protests in the city.

Sad news for SNL fans. Jan Hooks, who was on the show from 1986 to 1991, has died. She was 57.
