First Drip (11/12/14): Pipeline opposition, Climate deal reached, comet probe, RIP to rapper

Opposition is galvanizing against plans to put it in a natural gas pipeline from West Virginia to eastern North Carolina. The Atlantic Coast Pipeline is mainly a project of Dominion Resources and Duke Energy. Foes of the pipeline argue that the area is an unstable place to build a pipeline and could contaminate the drinking water.

President Obama brokered a landmark agreement between the U.S. and China, the world’s biggest carbon polluters, to create targets to curb emissions and spur other countries to make cuts. It could also recharge efforts to negotiate a new global climate agreement.

Today, scientists from the European Space Agency and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory will attempt to land a probe on a comet for the first time in human history. The Rosetta spacecraft is expected to drop a lander on the comet's uneven, enigmatic surface — a task estimated to take a grueling seven hours.

Big Bank Hank, the founding member of seminal rap group Sugar Hill Gang, died of kidney complications due to cancer at age 57. The Sugarhill Gang's 1979 hit "Rapper's Delight" was the first hip-hop song to chart and is still referenced in popular music today.
